Types of Hernia Surgery Covered
Inguinal Hernia Repair: The most common hernia type, occurring in the groin area. Both open mesh repair (Lichtenstein technique) and laparoscopic repair (TEP/TAPP) are covered at PMJAY general surgery hospitals. The surgical mesh is included in the package cost.
Umbilical Hernia Repair: Hernia at or near the navel. Common in women after pregnancy and in overweight adults. Open and laparoscopic repairs are both covered.
Incisional/Ventral Hernia Repair: Hernia occurring at the site of a previous surgical incision. Often requires larger mesh and more complex reconstruction. Fully covered under PM-JAY.
Complicated Hernia: Obstructed or strangulated hernia requiring emergency surgery. This is a surgical emergency — PM-JAY covers it without pre-authorisation at any empanelled hospital.
Laparoscopic vs Open — Which Is Better?
Laparoscopic hernia repair uses 3 small incisions and a camera, resulting in less pain, faster recovery, and smaller scars. Open repair uses a single larger incision and is technically simpler. Both are covered under PM-JAY — discuss with your surgeon which approach is best for your specific hernia. Many surgeons prefer laparoscopic repair for bilateral (both sides) inguinal hernias and recurrent hernias.
What to Expect
Hernia repair is typically a short hospital stay — 1-2 days for open repair, and sometimes day-care (same-day discharge) for laparoscopic repair. You can usually return to light activities within 1-2 weeks and full activity within 4-6 weeks. PM-JAY covers the surgery, mesh, medicines, and 15 days of post-discharge follow-up.
