PMJAY for Hysterectomy — Free Uterus Removal Surgery

Free Hysterectomy Under PM-JAY

Hysterectomy — surgical removal of the uterus — is one of the most performed gynaecological surgeries in India. Under PM-JAY, the procedure is covered completely free at empanelled hospitals with Obstetrics & Gynaecology, including both open and laparoscopic techniques.

When Is Hysterectomy Needed?

Hysterectomy is recommended for uterine fibroids causing heavy bleeding or pain, uterine prolapse (uterus dropping into the vaginal canal), abnormal uterine bleeding not responding to medication, endometriosis causing severe symptoms, adenomyosis, cervical or uterine cancer, and emergency situations like uncontrolled postpartum haemorrhage.

Types Covered Under PM-JAY

Total Abdominal Hysterectomy (TAH): Open surgery through an abdominal incision. Most common approach in government hospitals. 5-7 days hospitalisation.

Vaginal Hysterectomy: Uterus removed through the vagina — no abdominal incision. Suitable for uterine prolapse. Faster recovery, 3-5 days hospitalisation.

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH/LAVH): Minimally invasive approach using small incisions and camera. Least painful, fastest recovery, smallest scars. 2-4 days hospitalisation. Available at hospitals with laparoscopic capability.

All three approaches are covered under PM-JAY. The choice depends on your specific condition and the surgeon’s expertise.

Important Warning About Unnecessary Hysterectomy

There have been documented cases of unnecessary hysterectomies performed under health insurance schemes — especially on young women with conditions treatable by medication. Always get a second opinion before agreeing to hysterectomy. Many conditions like small fibroids, early endometriosis, and irregular bleeding can be managed with medicines or less invasive procedures. Visit another PMJAY gynaecology hospital for a second opinion.

Recovery

Full recovery takes 4-6 weeks for open surgery and 2-3 weeks for laparoscopic. Avoid heavy lifting for 6-8 weeks. PM-JAY covers 15 days of post-discharge follow-up including wound care and medication.
