Fracture Treatment and Bone Surgery Under PMJAY — Orthopaedic Guide

Fracture Treatment and Bone Surgery Under PMJAY

The Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme covers a comprehensive range of orthopaedics procedures, giving eligible patients access to life-saving and quality-of-life-improving treatments completely free of cost. This guide explains what specific procedures are covered, how to find the right hospital, and what to expect during treatment.

Procedures Covered Under PM-JAY

The PM-JAY scheme covers the following orthopaedics procedures: fracture fixation (plates, screws, nails, wires), spine surgery (disc, stenosis, fusion), arthroscopic surgery (knee, shoulder), ligament reconstruction (ACL, PCL, rotator cuff), bone tumour excision, and polytrauma management. Each procedure is covered as a defined package with a fixed rate — the hospital cannot charge you anything beyond the package.

Detailed Coverage

Fracture Treatment: Surgical fixation of fractures using plates, screws, intramedullary nails, K-wires, and external fixators. Covers fractures of all bones including femur (thigh bone), tibia (shin bone), humerus (arm bone), wrist, ankle, hip, and spinal fractures. The cost of implants (plates, screws, nails) is included in the PM-JAY package.

Spine Surgery: Surgical treatment for herniated disc (discectomy), spinal stenosis (laminectomy), scoliosis correction, and spinal fusion with instrumentation. Covers both cervical (neck) and lumbar (lower back) spine conditions. Implant costs (pedicle screws, rods, cages, artificial discs) are included.

Arthroscopic Surgery: Minimally invasive joint surgery using a camera and small instruments. Covers knee arthroscopy (meniscus repair, loose body removal), shoulder arthroscopy (rotator cuff repair, labral repair), and other joint arthroscopies.

Ligament Reconstruction: ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction, PCL reconstruction, and multi-ligament knee injuries. Uses autograft or allograft tissue. Common in sports injuries and road accident victims.

Polytrauma: Multiple injury management for accident victims requiring treatment to multiple body systems. PM-JAY has a dedicated Polytrauma specialty covering emergency stabilisation, multiple fracture fixation, and ICU care for severely injured patients.

How to Find a Hospital for Fracture Treatment and Bone Surgery

Not every PMJAY empanelled hospital offers orthopaedics services. You need to find a hospital specifically empanelled for this specialty in your district.

Step 1: Visit PMJAYHospitals.com — Orthopaedics

Step 2: Select your state and district to see all hospitals offering this specialty near you.

Step 3: Call the hospital to confirm they are currently performing the specific procedure you need under PM-JAY.

Step 4: Visit the hospital with your Ayushman Bharat card, Aadhaar card, and any existing medical reports.

Important Warning

After any fracture or serious injury, do not attempt to move the injured limb. Immobilise it and get to the nearest hospital. For accident victims with multiple injuries, call an ambulance (108) immediately. PM-JAY covers emergency polytrauma care.

Recovery and Post-Treatment Care

Fracture fixation recovery depends on the bone — typically 6-12 weeks for union. Spine surgery recovery is 1-3 months. Arthroscopic surgery recovery is 2-6 weeks. PM-JAY covers the hospitalisation, implants, and 15 days of post-discharge follow-up including initial physiotherapy.

What You Need to Carry

  • Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY card (physical or digital via ABHA app)
  • Aadhaar card (original, for biometric verification)
  • All existing medical reports, X-rays, scans, and prescriptions
  • Referral letter from your doctor (if available)
  • Previous discharge summary (if this is a follow-up treatment)

Cost to the Patient

The treatment is completely cashless under PM-JAY. You pay nothing — not for the surgery, not for medicines, not for implants or devices, not for ICU charges, and not for diagnostic tests during hospitalisation. The hospital settles the bill directly with the insurance company or state health agency. If any hospital asks you to pay, call the PMJAY helpline at 14555 immediately.
