Mental Health Treatment Under PM-JAY
Mental health is a covered specialty under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY. The scheme provides cashless hospitalisation for psychiatric disorders and de-addiction treatment, recognising that mental health conditions require medical care just like physical illnesses.
What Is Covered
Psychiatric Hospitalisation: Inpatient treatment for severe psychiatric conditions including acute psychosis, severe depression with suicidal risk, bipolar disorder during manic or depressive episodes, and treatment-resistant conditions requiring intensive medication adjustment. Covers ward charges, psychiatric medications, nursing care, and doctor consultations during the stay.
De-addiction Services: Medical detoxification and rehabilitation for alcohol, opioid, and substance use disorders. Covers the acute detoxification phase requiring hospitalisation, management of withdrawal symptoms, and initial stabilisation.
Schizophrenia Treatment: Hospitalisation for acute episodes of schizophrenia requiring medication initiation or adjustment, management of agitation, and stabilisation.
Mood Disorder Management: Severe depression requiring ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy) or intensive medication management in an inpatient setting.
What Is NOT Covered
PM-JAY covers inpatient (hospitalisation) psychiatric care only. Outpatient consultations, regular counselling sessions, psychotherapy sessions without hospitalisation, and long-term maintenance medications for stable patients are not covered. For ongoing outpatient mental health care, patients can access government mental health facilities under the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP).
