Heart Surgery Under Ayushman Bharat — Angioplasty, Bypass & More

Heart Surgery Under Ayushman Bharat

The Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme covers a comprehensive range of cardiology procedures, giving eligible patients access to life-saving and quality-of-life-improving treatments completely free of cost. This guide explains what specific procedures are covered, how to find the right hospital, and what to expect during treatment.

Procedures Covered Under PM-JAY

The PM-JAY scheme covers the following cardiology procedures: coronary angiography, angioplasty with stenting (PTCA), coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), heart valve replacement (mechanical and biological), pacemaker implantation, and echocardiography. Each procedure is covered as a defined package with a fixed rate — the hospital cannot charge you anything beyond the package.

Detailed Coverage

Coronary Angiography: A diagnostic procedure where a dye is injected into the heart’s blood vessels to detect blockages. This is usually the first step before deciding on angioplasty or bypass surgery. Covered as a day-care procedure under PM-JAY.

Angioplasty (PTCA) with Stenting: A minimally invasive procedure where a balloon catheter opens blocked coronary arteries and a stent is placed to keep them open. PM-JAY covers single-vessel, double-vessel, and triple-vessel angioplasty. The cost of drug-eluting stents is included in the package.

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG): Open-heart bypass surgery where blood vessels from another part of the body are used to bypass blocked coronary arteries. PM-JAY covers both on-pump and off-pump CABG. This is one of the highest-value packages under the scheme.

Heart Valve Replacement: Surgical replacement of damaged heart valves with mechanical or biological prostheses. Covers mitral valve, aortic valve, and double valve replacement. The cost of the prosthetic valve is included.

Pacemaker Implantation: Surgical placement of a permanent pacemaker device for patients with abnormal heart rhythms. Covers single-chamber and dual-chamber pacemakers. The device cost is included in the PM-JAY package.

How to Find a Hospital for Heart Surgery

Not every PMJAY empanelled hospital offers cardiology services. You need to find a hospital specifically empanelled for this specialty in your district.

Step 1: Visit PMJAYHospitals.com — Cardiology

Step 2: Select your state and district to see all hospitals offering this specialty near you.

Step 3: Call the hospital to confirm they are currently performing the specific procedure you need under PM-JAY.

Step 4: Visit the hospital with your Ayushman Bharat card, Aadhaar card, and any existing medical reports.

Important Warning

Heart conditions can be life-threatening. In case of chest pain, breathlessness, or suspected heart attack, go to the nearest hospital immediately — do not wait for PM-JAY paperwork. Emergency treatment will be provided first, and PM-JAY formalities can be completed within 24 hours.

Recovery and Post-Treatment Care

Recovery after angioplasty is typically 2-3 days of hospitalisation. CABG (bypass surgery) requires 7-10 days in hospital including ICU stay. PM-JAY covers the entire hospitalisation period plus 15 days of post-discharge follow-up including medicines and diagnostic tests.

What You Need to Carry

  • Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY card (physical or digital via ABHA app)
  • Aadhaar card (original, for biometric verification)
  • All existing medical reports, X-rays, scans, and prescriptions
  • Referral letter from your doctor (if available)
  • Previous discharge summary (if this is a follow-up treatment)

Cost to the Patient

The treatment is completely cashless under PM-JAY. You pay nothing — not for the surgery, not for medicines, not for implants or devices, not for ICU charges, and not for diagnostic tests during hospitalisation. The hospital settles the bill directly with the insurance company or state health agency. If any hospital asks you to pay, call the PMJAY helpline at 14555 immediately.
