Blood Disorder Treatment Under PM-JAY
Thalassemia, sickle cell disease, and haemophilia are lifelong blood disorders requiring regular medical care. PM-JAY covers hospitalisation-based treatment for these conditions, providing significant financial relief for affected families.
Thalassemia
Thalassemia major patients need regular blood transfusions every 2-4 weeks and iron chelation therapy to prevent iron overload. Under PM-JAY, each transfusion episode requiring hospitalisation is covered. More importantly, bone marrow transplant (haematopoietic stem cell transplant) — the only curative treatment for thalassemia major — is covered at select PMJAY oncology and haematology centres. This procedure costs ₹10-20 lakh at private hospitals but is completely cashless under PM-JAY.
Sickle Cell Disease
Sickle cell crises requiring emergency hospitalisation — including pain crises, acute chest syndrome, splenic sequestration, and stroke — are covered under PMJAY general medicine packages. Blood transfusion during crises, exchange transfusion, and management of organ complications are included. Sickle cell disease is particularly prevalent in tribal populations of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Jharkhand.
Haemophilia
Haemophilia patients experiencing bleeding episodes requiring hospitalisation, joint bleeds needing surgical drainage, and orthopaedic complications from repeated joint bleeds are covered under PM-JAY. Factor replacement therapy during hospitalisation is included in the treatment package.
Finding the Right Hospital
Blood disorders require haematology expertise. Search for hospitals with general medicine or medical oncology/haematology empanelment in major cities. Centres like Tata Memorial (Mumbai), AIIMS (Delhi), and CMC Vellore have dedicated haematology departments empanelled under PM-JAY.
