Free Cochlear Implant for Deaf Children Under Ayushman Bharat

Free Cochlear Implant Under PM-JAY

A cochlear implant can transform the life of a deaf child — enabling them to hear, develop speech, and attend mainstream school. This life-changing surgery is covered completely free under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, including the cost of the implant device which alone can cost ₹5-8 lakh.

What Is a Cochlear Implant?

A cochlear implant is an electronic device surgically placed inside the inner ear (cochlea) that directly stimulates the auditory nerve, bypassing damaged hair cells. Unlike hearing aids which amplify sound, cochlear implants create electrical signals that the brain interprets as sound. They are suitable for children with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss who do not benefit from hearing aids.

PM-JAY Coverage

The PM-JAY package for cochlear implant includes pre-surgical evaluation (audiological tests, CT/MRI of temporal bone, speech assessment), the surgery itself, the cochlear implant device and processor, hospitalisation and post-operative care, switch-on and initial mapping sessions, and 15 days of post-discharge follow-up. The entire cost — typically ₹6-10 lakh at private hospitals — is covered cashlessly.

Best Age for Implantation

The ideal age for cochlear implantation is between 1-3 years. Early implantation gives the child the best chance of developing normal speech and language. Children implanted before age 2 often catch up with their hearing peers by school age. The surgery can be done up to age 5-6 with good results, but outcomes decrease with increasing age of implantation.

Where to Find Cochlear Implant Hospitals

Cochlear implant surgery requires specialised equipment and trained surgeons. Search for hospitals with ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) empanelment under PMJAY in major cities. The procedure is typically available at medical colleges and large private hospitals in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad.

Post-Surgery Rehabilitation

The implant surgery is only the first step. The child needs months of auditory verbal therapy (AVT) to learn to interpret the sounds from the implant. This rehabilitation is crucial — without it, the implant’s benefit is limited. Parents should plan for regular therapy sessions for 1-2 years after implantation. While PM-JAY covers the surgery, ongoing rehabilitation therapy may need to be arranged through government disability programmes or NGOs.
