Organ Transplant Under PM-JAY — Complete Guide
Organ transplant is one of the highest-value procedures covered under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY. The scheme covers kidney transplant, liver transplant, heart transplant, and corneal transplant — including the surgery for both the recipient and the living donor.
Kidney Transplant
The most commonly performed transplant under PM-JAY. Covers pre-transplant evaluation (blood matching, crossmatch, tissue typing), the transplant surgery itself, ICU stay, immunosuppressive medications during hospitalisation, and post-transplant follow-up for 15 days. The living donor’s surgery and recovery are also covered under the same PM-JAY package. Find hospitals with transplant capability at PMJAY urology and nephrology hospitals.
Liver Transplant
Living donor liver transplant (LDLT) is covered under PM-JAY. This is one of the most complex and expensive surgeries in medicine — costing ₹15-25 lakh at private hospitals. Under PM-JAY, it is completely cashless. The donor evaluation, donor surgery (removing a portion of the liver), recipient surgery, prolonged ICU stay, and immunosuppressive therapy during hospitalisation are all included. Liver transplant is available at select PMJAY surgical gastroenterology hospitals in major cities.
Heart Transplant
Heart transplant is covered at empanelled centres with cardiothoracic surgery capability. Due to the complexity and rarity of donor hearts, this procedure is available at only a handful of centres — mostly in Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru.
Corneal Transplant
Replacement of damaged cornea with a donor cornea to restore vision. Available at PMJAY empanelled eye hospitals across India. The donor cornea is sourced through eye banks — PM-JAY covers the surgery cost.
What Is NOT Covered
PM-JAY covers the transplant surgery but not the cost of purchasing an organ (organ sale is illegal in India). Organs must be obtained through legal channels — living related donors or cadaveric donation through authorised organ retrieval centres. Post-transplant lifelong immunosuppressive medications after the 15-day post-discharge window are not covered under PM-JAY and must be managed separately.
How to Access Transplant Under PM-JAY
Transplant surgery is available at only select empanelled hospitals with the required infrastructure and expertise. Use PMJAYHospitals.com to search for hospitals empanelled for the specific transplant specialty in major cities. You may need to use PM-JAY’s portability feature to travel to a city hospital if your home district does not have a transplant centre.
