Dental and Oral Surgery Under PM-JAY
Regular dental checkups, fillings, root canals, and teeth cleaning are NOT covered under PM-JAY — these are outpatient procedures. However, PM-JAY does cover oral and maxillofacial surgery — surgical procedures involving the jaw, face, and mouth that require hospitalisation.
What IS Covered
Jaw Fracture Surgery: Surgical fixation of fractured jaw bones (mandible and maxilla) from accidents or trauma. Includes plates, screws, and wiring. Covered under oral and maxillofacial surgery or polytrauma packages.
Oral Cancer Surgery: Surgical removal of tumours of the mouth, tongue, jaw, salivary glands, and related structures. Includes neck dissection (lymph node removal) and reconstructive surgery. Followed by radiation therapy and chemotherapy if needed — all covered.
Cleft Palate Repair: Surgical correction of cleft palate in children — covered under plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Dental Cysts and Tumours: Surgical removal of large cysts (dentigerous cyst, odontogenic keratocyst) and benign tumours (ameloblastoma) of the jaw requiring hospitalisation and general anaesthesia.
TMJ Surgery: Surgical treatment of severe temporomandibular joint disorders causing jaw locking or severe pain unresponsive to conservative treatment.
What Is NOT Covered
Routine dental care — checkups, fillings, root canal treatment, tooth extraction (simple), dental implants for cosmetic purposes, braces/orthodontic treatment, teeth whitening, and dentures. These are outpatient procedures and fall outside PM-JAY’s hospitalisation coverage.
Finding Hospitals
Search for PMJAY hospitals with oral and maxillofacial surgery in your district. Major dental colleges and medical colleges with dental departments are typically empanelled for these procedures.
