PMJAY for Rural India — Accessing Healthcare in Villages

Over 65% of India’s population lives in rural areas where hospital access is limited. PM-JAY bridges this gap by empanelling not just city hospitals, but also Community Health Centres (CHCs), Sub-Divisional Hospitals, and District Hospitals in rural areas. Additionally, PM-JAY’s portability feature allows village residents to access advanced care at any empanelled hospital across India.

Hospital Options for Rural Patients

Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and CHCs: Many PHCs and CHCs in rural areas are empanelled under PM-JAY for basic medical and surgical care. These handle common conditions — fever, infections, diabetes management, normal deliveries, and minor surgeries. Search your district on PMJAYHospitals.com — you’ll find government facilities near your village.

District Hospital: Every district headquarters has a district hospital empanelled under PM-JAY. These offer a wider range of specialties including general surgery, maternity care, eye surgery, and fracture treatment.

City Hospitals (via referral): For advanced treatments like heart surgery, brain surgery, cancer treatment, or joint replacement, your district hospital doctor will refer you to a city hospital. PM-JAY covers the treatment at the referral hospital.

Transport Support

PM-JAY includes a transport allowance of ₹4,500 per hospitalisation to help cover travel costs. Additionally, most states operate the 108 free ambulance service for emergencies — dial 108 from anywhere. The Janani Express scheme provides free transport for pregnant women to reach the hospital for delivery.

Tips for Rural Patients

  • Your local ASHA worker can help you navigate the PM-JAY process
