PMJAY vs Private Health Insurance — Do You Need Both?

PMJAY vs Private Health Insurance

If your family has PM-JAY coverage, do you still need private health insurance? This comparison helps you understand the gaps in PM-JAY that private insurance fills — and whether the additional cost is worth it for your situation.

Coverage Comparison

Sum insured: PM-JAY provides ₹5 lakh per family per year. Private insurance typically starts at ₹3-5 lakh and can go up to ₹1 crore or more depending on the plan and premium.

Room type: PM-JAY covers general ward only. Private insurance covers private or semi-private rooms depending on the plan — and many offer single AC room as standard.

Hospital choice: PM-JAY works only at empanelled hospitals. Private insurance typically covers any hospital — empanelled or not (with cashless at network hospitals and reimbursement at others).

OPD coverage: PM-JAY does NOT cover outpatient consultations. Some private insurance plans include OPD coverage for doctor visits, medicines, and diagnostic tests.

Waiting period: PM-JAY has NO waiting period — pre-existing diseases are covered from day one. Private insurance typically has 2-4 year waiting periods for pre-existing conditions.

Cost: PM-JAY is completely free for beneficiaries. Private insurance costs ₹5,000-25,000+ per year depending on coverage, age, and family size.

Where PM-JAY Falls Short

PM-JAY’s ₹5 lakh limit can be exhausted quickly for conditions requiring long treatment — dialysis patients, cancer patients needing multiple chemotherapy cycles, or families where multiple members need surgery in the same year. Private insurance with higher sum insured provides a safety net beyond ₹5 lakh.

PM-JAY also doesn’t cover outpatient care. Regular doctor visits, prescription medicines, diagnostic tests without hospitalisation, and dental/vision care are out of pocket. If your family has ongoing medical needs requiring frequent doctor visits, private insurance with OPD coverage helps.

Do You Need Both?

For most PM-JAY eligible families, the scheme provides excellent hospitalisation coverage. Adding private insurance may not be affordable or necessary. However, if family income grows beyond PM-JAY eligibility, transitioning to private insurance is advisable to maintain health coverage. For families with members who have chronic conditions requiring frequent hospitalisation, supplementary private insurance provides extra security.
