PMJAY Hospital Bed and Room Type — General Ward Rules Explained

PMJAY Hospital Room — What You Get

Under PM-JAY, you are entitled to a general ward bed at any empanelled hospital. Understanding what is included — and what you can or cannot upgrade — helps set the right expectations.

What General Ward Includes

The PM-JAY general ward package includes a bed in a shared ward (typically 4-10 beds per room), nursing care, prescribed medicines during hospitalisation, diagnostic tests as required, food/diet as prescribed by the doctor, access to shared bathroom facilities, and attendant space for one family member.

Can You Upgrade to a Private Room?

PM-JAY does not cover private or semi-private rooms. If you want a room upgrade, you would need to pay the difference out of your own pocket. However, this is tricky — PM-JAY is designed as a cashless scheme, and hospitals cannot charge you for anything within the covered package. The room upgrade would be a separate, non-PM-JAY payment.

In practice, some private hospitals offer semi-private rooms (2 beds) as their general ward standard. The room type varies by hospital — a general ward at a large private hospital may be more comfortable than one at a busy government hospital.

ICU Beds

When medically necessary, ICU (Intensive Care Unit) and ICCU (Intensive Cardiac Care Unit) beds are fully covered under PM-JAY. This includes ventilator support, monitoring equipment, and specialised nursing care. ICU charges are part of the PM-JAY surgical and medical packages for procedures like cardiac surgery, brain surgery, and polytrauma care.

Tips

When choosing between hospitals for elective surgery, visit the hospital in advance and see the general ward facilities. Some PMJAY empanelled hospitals offer better general ward infrastructure than others. Check bed comfort, cleanliness, bathroom quality, and food service. This is perfectly fair — you are choosing where to get treated, and the ward experience varies significantly between hospitals.
