Is ₹5 Lakh PM-JAY Coverage Enough?
The Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme provides ₹5 lakh per family per year — one of the highest government health insurance covers in the world. For most hospitalisations, this is more than sufficient. But there are situations where the limit can fall short.
When ₹5 Lakh Is Enough
For single-event hospitalisations, ₹5 lakh covers almost everything. Cataract surgery costs around ₹15,000-30,000. Hernia repair is ₹20,000-40,000. Even knee replacement surgery at ₹1.5-2.5 lakh fits well within the limit. A single bypass surgery (CABG) at ₹2-3.5 lakh is covered.
When ₹5 Lakh Falls Short
Cancer treatment: Multiple chemotherapy cycles at PMJAY oncology hospitals, combined with surgery and radiation, can easily exceed ₹5 lakh over a treatment course spanning 6-12 months.
Multiple family members: If two or three family members need major surgery in the same year, the shared floater limit may not stretch far enough.
Chronic dialysis: Regular haemodialysis at 2-3 sessions per week can consume ₹4-6 lakh per year from PMJAY urology hospitals, leaving little for other family members.
Complex surgeries: Organ transplants (especially liver), complicated cardiac cases, and polytrauma with extended ICU stays can approach or exceed the ₹5 lakh limit.
What to Do When Coverage Runs Out
Check state top-up: Several states provide additional coverage — Odisha (BSKY) gives ₹10 lakh for women, Punjab and J&K have universal coverage with extended limits.
Government hospital route: If PM-JAY limit is exhausted, government hospitals (AIIMS, state medical colleges) provide subsidised or free treatment through their own welfare schemes.
PM National Relief Fund: For very high-cost treatments, families can apply to the PM National Relief Fund for additional assistance.
Overall, ₹5 lakh is sufficient for 90%+ of hospitalisations. For the edge cases, state schemes and government hospital welfare programmes provide additional safety nets.
