PMJAY for Migrant Workers — Your Card Works Everywhere
India has over 10 crore internal migrant workers who live and work in states different from their home state. If you are a migrant worker with a PM-JAY card issued in Bihar, UP, Odisha, Rajasthan, or any other state — your card is valid at any PMJAY empanelled hospital across India.
How to Use Your Card in Your Work State
The process is identical to using it in your home state. Visit any empanelled hospital, go to the Ayushman Mitra desk, show your PM-JAY card and Aadhaar, get biometric verification done, and receive cashless treatment. No additional permissions, no referral letter from your home state, and no extra documents needed.
For example, a construction worker from Bihar working in Ahmedabad, Gujarat can walk into any PMJAY empanelled hospital in Ahmedabad and get treated for a work-site fracture completely free.
Common Challenges and Solutions
Language barrier: The Ayushman Mitra at the hospital is trained to handle inter-state patients. If you face language issues, ask the Mitra for help or call 14555 — the helpline supports multiple languages.
Hospital refuses out-of-state card: This is a violation. Call 14555 immediately. All empanelled hospitals are required to accept PM-JAY cards from any state.
Finding hospitals in an unfamiliar city: Use PMJAYHospitals.com on your mobile — select the state and district where you are currently working, choose the specialty you need, and get a list of empanelled hospitals with phone numbers.
Emergency at work site: For work-site accidents, go to the nearest hospital. PM-JAY covers emergency polytrauma care without prior authorisation. Tell the hospital you have PM-JAY — they will start treatment first.
Important for Employers
If you employ migrant workers, help them access PM-JAY by keeping a list of nearby empanelled hospitals, displaying the 14555 helpline number at the work site, and assisting injured workers in reaching the hospital with their Aadhaar card.
